Scientists are currently working on an AI system that tries to mimic the subtleties of humour by laughing
The team that created Erica, the laughing robot, claims that the method could enhance casual talks
between humans and AI systems. To teach their AI system the craft of in-conversation laughter,
Inoue and his colleagues set out to do just that. More than 80 speed-dating exchanges between the robot and
male university students were used to collect training data. The robot was initially teleoperated by
four female amateur actors.
The dialogue data was annotated for solo laughter,
social laughter (laughing out of joy), and social laughter where humour wasn't present. Then,
using this data, a machine learning system was trained to decide whether to laugh and what kind of laugh.
