Following the tragic death of his predecessor, Lt. New Chief of Defense Staff (CDS)
In contrast to the Additional Secretary position the CDS post previously held, General Anil Chauhan will also hold the position of Secretary for the Department of Military Affairs (DMA) of the Government of India. The officer’s appointment puts to rest rumors that the CDS and Secretary of the DMA positions might be divided.
General Chauhan will serve as the senior-most representative between the government and the Indian military in his capacity as CDS. Along with leading the Chiefs of Staff Committee and the Integrated Defence Staff, he will also oversee government decisions about hiring, training, and staffing.
Who is General Anil Chauhan?
General Chauhan, 61, a graduate of the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun and the National Defense Academy in Khadakwasla, was initially commissioned into the 11 Gorkha Rifles of the Indian Army in 1981.
He was the first active-duty officer to hold the position of brigadier over the Department of Indian Army Veterans. He oversaw an infantry division as a major general in the Baramulla zone of Northern Command, and he later oversaw the 3 Corps as a lieutenant general under Eastern Command. He was even appointed General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Eastern Command in September 2019, a position he held until his retirement in May 2021.
At the time of the airstrike on Balakot in February 2019, General Chauhan served as the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO). Together with National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval, he served as the DGMO for Operation Sunrise 1 and 2, coordinated operations by the Indian army and the armies of India and Myanmar against insurgent camps in the northeast, which took place in February and mid-May of 2019, respectively. The officer also participated in the UN operation in Angola.
Following his retirement, Chauhan worked as the NSA’s Military Advisor for the National Security Council Secretariat.
Lt. General Anil Chauhan had held several commands, staff, and instrumental positions throughout his nearly 40-year career and had a wealth of experience in counterinsurgency operations in Jammu & Kashmir and North-East India, according to a statement from the Ministry of Defence.
He has received the Sena Medal, Vishisht Seva Medal, Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, and Ati Vishisht Seva Medal for his service.
